Description of the Heliamphora
The Heliamphora is a carnivorous plant of the family 'Sarracenia' and is found in South America. There are eight species of the Heliamphora, but because the area is so difficult to reach and because little research has been done on this family, there could be more species. These carnivorous plants are found on table mountains in Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. The cup has a distinctive appearance and looks like a leaf that is rolled up. Although pitcher plant (Sarracenia) have a lid over the cup, this plant does not need one. A slot at the top of the cup allows excess water to drain away easily. At the top of the cup, there are nectar glands that attract insects. The cups have downward-pointing hairs, so that the insect cannot escape. Through micro-organisms, the insects are broken down and served as food.
Rare in the hobby: Just like the Australian Cup Plant (Cephalotus Follicularis), you will not often come across the Heliamphora. But its unique appearance and beautiful cups make it an eye-catcher in the home.
